One of the first things Katy and I do when we meet new clients is to remove over 80% off their ‘to- do’ list.

Yes I know, counterintuitive isn’t it; however, it works, and the reason is we help our clients focus by managing their energy.

The saying goes that we can always make more money though we can’t make more time. However, what we can do is work with our energy and that surprisingly gives us more time.

“I meditate for an hour each day unless I am extremely busy then I meditate for 2 hours.- Gandhi.

Let’s Get Real

Business growth 101; you’ll never get it all done. So, stop trying. Instead, let’s explore different options.

As I write this post, I have just come back from a break. I feel refreshed, my energy levels are topped up, and I am full of ideas. When I talk to clients, they share similar stories.  Rest, good food and time with friends and family is a restorer as it impacts our energy levels in a positive way.

Tony Schwartz wrote a bestselling book called The Power of Full Engagement. In it, he shared that the core problem with working longer hours is that time is a finite resource. Energy is a different story.

Defined in physics as the capacity to work, energy comes from four main wellsprings in human beings: the body, emotions, mind, and spirit.

In each, energy can be systematically expanded and regularly renewed by establishing specific rituals—behaviours that are intentionally practised and precisely scheduled, with the goal of making them unconscious and automatic as quickly as possible.

Fact: Your personal time is a finite resource. However, you can buy other peoples’ which most of us forget.

[Hint: Think outsourcing tasks in the business or delegating to team members.]

Fact: Energy is not a finite resource, and there are multiple ways to increase our energy.

For most of us, it’s about establishing good habits.

Last year I was lucky enough to spend time on Necker Island for a business retreat with Sir Richard Branson and a group of extremely successful business owners.

One thing they all had in common was the ability to focus and manage their energy.

The mind body and spirit are all connected, and their interaction is what drives our growth. So in this post let’s start with an easy win with managing our energy through our body.

Our Behaviours and Habits

No apologies here but are your current habits serving you?

What energy depleting habits are you locked into?

If you don’t tackle them now, the good old universe will somehow get your attention and possibly in a way you were least expecting.

A good friend of mine managed to break her toe recently. She fell over a case of wine. The irony was not lost on her that she was drinking too much and by her own admission needed a shove in the right direction to clean up her act.

An amusing story maybe and yet I am sure we all have other examples of individuals that have had a breakdown or totally lose their mojo for months while their agency starts to crash and burn.

So where are the easy wins when it comes to improving our energy?

Fuel

Not always the most popular idea we share but what are you putting into your body? If you have ever put petrol in a diesel car by mistake or vice versa, you know where we are going with this one.

The right fuel for our body is critical.

The Paleo diet and intermittent fasting are hugely popular for a reason as they go back to basics. We are not suggesting you dive headlong into any specific diet, by the way.

Let’s be honest we are all intelligent human beings, so a few questions for you?

  • Are you eating too much sugar?
  • Are you drinking every day of the week?
  • Are most of your food processed?

It’s easy when you are running around hyper-busy, to pick up a pizza and a bottle of red on the way home; I know!

However, alcohol is a sleep disturber and can act as a depressant as you get older. There are a few more if you need further convincing that you can read here.

It’s about cutting back. Do it and watch your energy levels improve.

Consider Klaire labs health supplements too; there is a clue in the title!

With our modern-day diets, it’s not always easy to get the right nutrients so consider buying them. They certainly work. Otherwise, people wouldn’t purchase them in the volume they do.

Sleep

Most of us don’t get enough sleep. Schwartz shared what happened to one of his students who decided to go to bed earlier.

Steve went to bed earlier and cut out alcohol, which was disrupting his sleep. Therefore, when he woke up, he felt more rested and more motivated to exercise, which he now does almost every morning.

In less than two months he lost 15 pounds. After working out, he now sits down with his family for breakfast.

Steve still works long hours, and he renews himself regularly along the way. He leaves his desk for lunch and usually takes a morning and an afternoon walk outside; more than possible for all of us.

When he arrives home in the evening, he’s more relaxed and better able to connect with his partner and children.

These two simple ideas alone will create a huge shift for you. Schwartz reveals in his book a study with a bank based in New Jersey. The team of salespeople they worked with had over a 13% improvement in new business above the control group….. have we got your attention now?

Mind and Spirit

This could be the subject of a blog post and suffice to say here at Centredexcellence a focus on working with our clients and their mindset, is a huge part of how we work.

Why? Because as Tony Schwartz has shared in his book, it forms one of the key energy pillars to doing more.
